Automobile accidents in U.S. in 2016 rise to their highest level since in 2007: 2-year increase most in over 50 years

Different year, even worse results. Sadly.

In its annual report released last week, the National Safety Council announced that lower gas prices and distractions while driving (texting and drunk driving chief among them) helped lead to another significant rise in fatal auto accidents throughout the United States in 2016.

In the report released last Wednesday, the National Safety Council said that approximately 40,200 motor vehicle deaths occurred from January through December of 2016 – an increase of 6% from the same period in 2015, and 14% over the two years since 2014, the largest 2-year jump in over 50 years.

As we here at Slinkman, Slinkman & Wynne, P.A. we have been saying for over 40 years, even one death from an automobile accident is too many. Unfortunately, too many of our fellow Floridians and Americans just do not seem to be getting message – stop texting while driving, and using drugs or alcohol before getting behind the wheel of an automobile. You are putting your own life, and the lives of everyone around you in serious danger.

As Deborah A.P. Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council asked in her statement, “Why are we ok with this?”

“Complacency is killing us.”

Safety advocates point to the continuing rise in the number of deaths as a percentage of miles driven as proof that distracted driving – particularly texting and drug and alcohol use – as proof that too many people take the danger of driving for granted.

Texting & Driving: a preventable cause of too many deaths and injuries on Florida roadways

Stop Texting While Driving Sign

The time has come. In fact, it has long since passed. And now we have another year’s worth of statistical data that shows beyond a shadow of a doubt that we need more of a deterrent to stop texting and driving – and most other forms of cellphone usage while operating a motor vehicle.

In the state of Florida in 2015 alone 214 people were killed in accidents caused by “distracted driving.” An astounding 39,396… yes, over 39,000! Were injured. We ask every single citizen of this state – when is enough enough? How many more lives need to be lost or forever changed for the negative because of someone else’s negligence?

The fact is that our states’ laws against texting and driving, and cellphone usage while driving in general are some of the most lax in the entire country. For example, texting while driving is still considered a “secondary” offense here in Florida. A secondary offense means that you must get pulled over for committing some other offense before you get cited for texting while driving as well.

How many more lives will be lost needlessly and carelessly before we as a state get serious about curbing “distracted driving”? Our drinking and driving laws have become significantly more costly – in both money and freedoms taken away – than they were just a few short years ago. The same needs to happen with Florida’s texting and driving laws, as well.

Here are several websites we have mentioned before, such as http://www.textinganddrivingsafety.com/ and https://noys.org/ to see what you can do to help spread the word on curtailing texting and driving with teenage drivers, and all other drivers.

Texting and driving – causes auto accidents in Jupiter, Florida and all throughout the country

The statistics bear it out – texting while driving increases your chances of getting into an accident by an exponential percentage. The problem is so big and so widespread that texting while driving has eclipsed even eclipsed drunk driving in the number of auto accidents caused by some form of distraction in Florida and throughout the United States.

For teen drivers, the statistics are even scarier. The number of fatalities caused by texting while driving surpassed the number of deaths caused by drunk driving in 2012 for the first time, according to a study published by Cohen Children’s Medical Center. More than 3,000 teens died in crashes involving texting while approximately 2,700 died in accidents involving alcohol.

Many insurance companies treat texting while driving in a similar fashion to someone who is impaired by alcohol or drugs. If it can be proven you are texting while driving, they will deny coverage. There is so much downside to texting while driving that it is just not worth it. But even as it becomes less and less socially acceptable to text and drive, as responsible citizens we must continue to increase awareness and communications with all drivers, and particularly teenagers who are about to or have just obtained their driver’s licenses.

Check out websites like http://www.textinganddrivingsafety.com/ and https://noys.org/ to see what you can do to help spread the word on curtailing texting and driving with teenage drivers, and all other drivers. We also believe that the texting and driving laws in the state of Florida need to be more stringent, as they are in many other states around the country.
