Slinkman, Slinkman & Wynne, P.A. safety – tips to keep you safe while operating or riding upon a motorcycle

Motorcycle riding on the open road

Summer is here – for motorcycle riders, that means heading out on the open road to quench their thirst for the excitement and freedom that comes along with driving their motorcycles. At Slinkman, Slinkman & Wynne, P.A. we understand the lure of motorcycles for those who love them. We also realize that motorcycle driving can be very dangerous, particularly on the crowded highways here in south Florida.

With that in mind, we offer a list of tips for safe motorcycle driving and riding:

  1. Drive defensively
    1. Bad automobile drivers cause accidents with motorcycles; but so too do bad motorcycle drivers themselves. Aggressively operating a motorcycle causes a significant number of motorcycle accidents, as well.
  2. Do NOT drink and operate or ride on a motorcycle
    1. In a study cited in an article on motorcyclecruiser.com, the California Highway Patrol found that 69 percent of all at-fault motorcycle collisions happened when the rider was “under the influence” of drugs or alcohol.
  3. Follow the rules of the road
    1. Piggybacking on tip #2, following the rules of the road gives you a much better chance of getting back home safe and sound.
  4. Consistently check your motorcycle, particularly after longer rides, to make sure it is in proper working condition.
  5. If you have not done so already, take a motorcycle safety course.
  6. Both driver and rider should wear well-made protective helmets.
    1. Yes, we realize that here in Florida by law you can operate or ride on a motorcycle without a helmet or protective headgear. However, we have seen the results of what riding without a helmet can do in an accident. A helmet can save you from severe brain damage and even death. It is your head, your brain and your life – protect it.
  7. You should also wear protective clothing.
    1. Protective clothing can significantly lessen the damage to your body, particularly to your skin.
  8. Stay out of the blind spots of automobile and truck drivers
    1. The biggest problem with weaving in and out of traffic when you are operating your motorcycle is that invariably you end up crossing into and out of blind spots. As a result you significantly raise the chance that someone will accidently move into your path from another lane.
  9. Always be aware of road hazards and obstructions

Where to get help if you or a loved one is in a motorcycle accident in Palm Beach Gardens

“Why ride a motorcycle? Riding is something most people don’t have to do, but rather feel compelled to–for a wide variety of reasons ranging from passion to practicality.

One of the most distinct things about riding is that nothing feels quite like a motorcycle; the thrill of being at one with a two-wheeled machine that weighs only a few hundred pounds is one of the purest ways to get from point A to B, and the risks involve sometimes even heighten that enjoyment.” http://motorcycles.about.com/od/motorcyclingbasic1/ss/Why_Ride.htm.

Riding a motorcycle can be one of the most exhilarating feelings you can experience in your lifetime. Unfortunately, if you are in an accident while riding on a motorcycle, the results can be devastating.  According to state records, in 2012 alone 457 people died in motorcycle accidents in Florida… the 3rd most of any state in the United States. And almost 10,000 more were injured – many seriously.

If you or anyone you know has been injured in a motorcycle accident, our Palm Beach Gardens Injury Attorneys are here to help.  The reality is…if you’re a Florida biker living in the Palm Beaches, it’s not a matter of if you’ll be involved in an accident, but when. Knowing the right (and wrong) things to do at the scene can be critical to ensuring your immediate legal and financial protection as well as your physical and emotional well-being down the road. That’s where we come in.

Your coverage determined by your insurance policy may not be sufficient to cover your losses. Moreover, the insurance carriers have their own interests at heart when determining how to cover damages to your bike and your personal injuries. Damage to your bike is usually paid through your insurance company up front and then recovered from the perpetrator’s insurance company. If you are hospitalized from your accident through no fault of your own, you would have medical coverage up to the limits of liability stated on the insurance policy of the other party.

Every Palm Beach Gardens motorcycle owner (and auto owner for that matter) should review their insurance policy from their insurance company to be sure they have sufficient limits of liability and other coverage they would need if they suffered damage from a motorcycle accident. If you have had a motorcycle accident in Palm Beach, Florida, then you need a motorcycle accident attorney from Slinkman, Slinkman, & Wynne to get the best legal advice available.  Although we work in Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens, we can represent you anywhere in the state of Florida.
